When a storm took part of your fence, take photos of the fence and of what hit it before anything is cleared. Then call your insurer and a fence company. Keep clear of any wire on or near the fence and report it to the electric utility.
Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?
We can. Call or text (773) 741-0364 with a picture and a rough length. A run on the ground with broken posts is a major repair, $900 to $2,500 in the national 2026 figures. A big wind storm hits the whole city on the same night, and fence crews fill their week quickly, so get on a list early.
My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?
We can close the gap the same visit, for the short term. The standing posts are braced and a temporary panel goes across the hole. The proper repair follows once materials are on hand. Tell us on the phone about dogs, a pool or an open alley side, and we set the order of work around that.
Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?
That differs from one company to the next, and some do no work outside normal hours. Ask when you call. It usually costs less to have the opening made safe quickly and the full repair done on a weekday.
Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?
Often it does, as an other structure on your policy. What your policy says, the deductible and the cause all count, and your agent or insurer is the one to confirm it. On a short run the deductible can be higher than the repair. We give you an itemized estimate to send in.
My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?
In most cases you claim on your own policy for your own fence, no matter whose tree it was. A tree that was dead or known to be dangerous can change that. Ask your insurer how they handle it. In Chicago a parkway tree belongs to the city, so report a fallen parkway tree to 311. We can rebuild just the broken sections when the style is still made.
The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?
Request the adjuster's calculation in writing. Many policies pay the depreciated value of an old fence, not the price of a new one. Reply with an itemized estimate. If the gap stays, fixing only the stretch that was hit is often what the payout can cover.
The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?
Whoever owns the fence, so start by finding whose lot it is on. The Illinois Fence Act (765 ILCS 130) says adjoining owners each keep up a just share of a division fence, but it was written for farm land and does not sort out an ordinary city yard quickly. A licensed land surveyor marks the line. A fence company cannot. See our shared fence page for more.
