Frequently asked questions

How much does a fence cost in Chicago?

Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per foot in 2026 on national published figures. Your price depends on the footage, height, gates and what has to be removed. Our fence cost guide lists ranges by material.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Chicago?

Yes, if the fence is more than 5 feet high. A fence of 5 feet or less needs no building permit when it meets the Zoning Ordinance, unless the property is a landmark. Most nearby suburbs require a permit at any height.

How deep do you set fence posts in Chicago?

42 inches. The Chicago Building Code puts footings at least that far below grade for frost. Shallow posts heave in clay and the fence leans.

Who calls 811 before digging?

Whoever digs. In the city the request goes to 811 Chicago at least two business days ahead. In the suburbs it goes to JULIE. We place it for every fence we install.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Repair when the damage is in one place and the other posts are firm. Replace when the repair nears half the cost of a new fence or posts are failing along the whole line.

Who pays for a fence between neighbors in Illinois?

In Chicago and the Cook County suburbs, the owner who wants the fence pays unless the neighbor agrees to share. The Illinois Fence Act's rule that makes a neighbor pay for a new fence does not apply here.

How much does a new fence cost in Chicago?

It depends on the material, the length and height, the number of gates and whether an old fence has to come out. We measure on site and give you a written quote with the options side by side.

How long does a fence installation take?

Most residential fences take 2-3 working days, spread over about a week so the concrete around the posts can set.

Which fence material lasts longest?

Vinyl and aluminum need the least upkeep. Cedar looks great and lasts many years when it is sealed. Chain link is the most affordable. We explain the trade-offs for your yard.

Do you repair fences or only install new ones?

Both. We fix leaning posts, storm damage, broken panels and sagging gates, and we tell you honestly when a repair makes more sense than a replacement.
